Tourist Attractions
Saint-Petersburg was founded in 1703 at the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea. It is often called Northern Venice as there are 300 km or rivers and canals and 345 bridges. From the end of May till the middle of July there are famous “white nights,” when it does not get dark at night and many people walk and visit different cultural events.
Tourist attractions in the town and surrounding areas:
- The State Hermitage - a museum of art and culture. One of the largest and oldest museums in the world, it was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been opened to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise nearly three million items, including the largest collection of paintings in the world.
- The Hermitage consists of six buildings. Four of them, the main museum complex, are named the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage and New Hermitage, which are partially open to the public. Two others are the Hermitage Theatre and the Reserve House. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad.
- The Peter and Paul Fortress is the original citadel of St.-Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703.
- The Mariinsky Theatre is a historic theater of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg. Opened in 1860, it became the preminent music theater of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. The Mariinsky Theatre is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera and Mariinsky Orchestra.
