This city was highly urbanized in the second part of the 19th century when the first train arrived in 1858 and financial institutions were set up. Developing dynamically, Nyíregyháza had become the county seat of Szabolcs County in 1876. The telegraph office, the post and water authority palace, the theater were built, then the first tramline started operation in 1911. The city has been developing continuously in terms of economy, culture and demography since the 1960s. Industrialization started, the number of population increased and housing estates were built. Nyíregyháza has become a school city: education started at the colleges of theology, teacher training, agriculture and health care. Today the city of county rights with a population of over 115,000, offers rich programs with its public education and sports facilities, public collections, its Museum Village, Zoo Park, Sóstó (salty lake) of picturesque beauty and high standard artistic life. Nyíregyháza is a busy and beautiful city of pleasant atmosphere. The city panorama is rich with parks, places, and large green areas, modern and old buildings ensuring a traditional atmosphere.
