Bihar is located in the Eastern part of India. It is an entirely land–locked state and lies mid-way between the humid West Bengal in the east and the sub humid Uttar Pradesh in the west, which provides it with a transitional position in respect of climate, economy and culture. It is bordered by Nepal in the North and by Jharkhand in the south. Its geographical size is 98,940 km2. The state is one of the oldest inhabited places in the world, with a history going back 3,000 years. Bihar was a center of power, learning and culture in ancient and classical India. Bihar’s rich culture and heritage is evident from the innumerable ancient monuments that are dotted all over the state. From Magadha arose India's first and greatest empire, the Maurya empire, as well as one of the world's most widely subscribed religions, Buddhism.

Nalanda University, established during 5th century A.D., is considered the first residential university ever in the world. It stands as proof of India’s prominent role in imparting knowledge. The university had approximately 2,000 teachers who taught over 10,000 students from all parts of the world. The uniqueness of the place could be gauged by the fact that Buddha himself was a teacher here and Hieun-Tsang, Chinese traveler and a great scholar, was a student of this university. Red rocks were used in the construction, which is built in Kushana style of architecture.
Bodh Gaya is the most sacred pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. It is the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. To visitors, Bodh Gaya offers enchanting natural beauty coupled with rich cultural and religious pilgrimage. The famous Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya is one of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The Mahabodhi Temple is revered equally by the Buddhists as well as the Hindus. Muchalinda Lake acquired its name from Shesh Naga, or the Snake King Muchalinda, who protected Buddha during a storm while he was into the sixth week of meditation. Muchalinda protected Buddha from the rising waves and the place was named after him in honor of his services. The green trees by the lake and the lush greenery make it the most frequented tourist spot in Bodh Gaya.
